Golden Elixir: NINE SPICES' Turmeric
Turmeric's sunset orange color is matched with a rich, slightly dusty, warm flavor. Because of its color and capacity to meld spice flavors together in a meal, it is consequently employed in a plethora of spice mixes.
The root of turmeric belongs to the same family as ginger and is grown under similar circumstances. To keep weeds and pests away, the soil is solarized—a process that involves slowly burning coconut shells soaked in water—before the roots are planted, much like potatoes. When the turmeric root is ready to be harvested, it is dug up, cleaned, and quickly cooked to halt its growth before it dries out and solidifies. The peel and other impurities are polished off before it is machine-cooled, leaving the gorgeous yellow-orange powder as the end product.
In seafood recipes, curries with meat, lentils, beans, and cabbage, and BBQ rubs, turmeric is a terrific addition. We sell powdered turmeric since dry turmeric root is very difficult to crush in a typical kitchen due to its hardness.
